  报告一: Understanding Olfaction: Sensory Coding in a Simple Organism

  Understanding how the olfactory system codes for different odours is a huge challenge for sensory biologists. Most natural odours are multi-dimensional and chemically highly complex. Yet even a simple organism such as the fruit fly larva can detect and discriminate a wide range of odours in order to produce the appropriate behavioural response.
  
  In our research we are using behavioural, electrophysiological, genetic and computational approaches to study how individual sensory neurons in the larva's 'nose' recognise and code for both pure and natural odours. The ultimate aim is to 'crack' the olfactorycode.
